Srinagar's famous urban lake — houseboats, shikara boats and the Mughal gardens along its banks, all reflected in genuinely still water at dawn.
Dal Lake is the defining image of Srinagar — a roughly 18 sq km lake bordered by the Zabarwan mountain range, dotted with houseboats, floating gardens, and shikara boats that have operated on its waters for generations. It's not a single fixed viewpoint but a whole working waterscape, with distinct areas including the interconnected Nigeen Lake, floating vegetable markets, and the Mughal-era gardens (Nishat and Shalimar Bagh) built directly along its shoreline.
Shikara rides are the standard way to actually get out onto the water for a shoot, and most boatmen are used to photographers — the lake's calm surface and mountain backdrop make it genuinely reliable for reflection shots, especially in the stillness just after sunrise before the wind picks up.
Dal Lake sits at an altitude of roughly 1,583m, so weather and light shift noticeably with the seasons — winter mornings can be foggy and cold, while summer gives longer, more predictable golden-hour windows. Houseboats along the lake are themselves a distinctive architectural subject, many with ornately carved wooden facades dating back over a century.

Drone policy
Jammu & Kashmir has active airspace restrictions given the region's security situation — drone use requires prior permission from local authorities and should not be assumed to be simple to arrange.
Permission process
No permission is needed for personal photography from a hired shikara. Larger commercial productions should coordinate with the Jammu & Kashmir Tourism Department in advance.
