A red sandstone Mughal city built and abandoned within decades — sweeping courtyards and near-uniform red stone architecture that photographs very differently from Agra's marble monuments.

About this location

Fatehpur Sikri was built by Emperor Akbar in the 1570s as his capital, then abandoned within about 15 years, reportedly due to water shortages. What remains is an unusually complete Mughal city — palaces, courtyards, a massive mosque (Jama Masjid) and the towering Buland Darwaza gateway — built almost entirely from red sandstone, giving the whole complex a consistent, monochrome look that stands apart from Agra's more famous marble sites.

Because it was never significantly rebuilt or repurposed after abandonment, the layout reads clearly as a functioning city rather than a single monument, which makes it genuinely useful for shoots needing scale and repetition — long colonnades, symmetrical courtyards, and the sheer height of Buland Darwaza (one of the tallest gateways in the world).

It sits about 40km from Agra, making it a realistic same-day pairing with the Taj Mahal or Agra Fort for a two-location shoot day.
