A high-altitude lake that shifts through blues and turquoise across its length, straddling the India-China border at roughly 4,225m — remote, genuinely open, and unlike anything else on this platform.
Pangong Tso stretches roughly 134km, with about a third of it in Indian territory and the rest across the border in Tibet. At an altitude of around 4,225m, it's one of the highest saltwater lakes in the world, and its color shifts dramatically through the day — from deep blue to turquoise to almost grey — depending on the light and viewing angle.
The lake gained wide recognition after being featured in a well-known Bollywood film, and Indian tourism to the area has grown substantially since. The shoreline is largely barren, high-desert terrain, with the Chang Chenmo mountain range running along the northern side.
Getting here is itself part of the experience: it's roughly a 5-6 hour drive from Leh, crossing Chang La pass (one of the world's highest motorable passes). Altitude sickness is a genuine risk given the elevation, and this isn't a place to rush a shoot — acclimatization in Leh first is standard practice before heading out here.
