An intricately carved five-storey stepwell near Ahmedabad, its symmetrical stone columns creating striking light-and-shadow frames.

About this location

Built in 1499, Adalaj ni Vav descends five storeys underground through richly carved sandstone pillars and platforms. The repeating geometric columns and shafts of light filtering down make it one of Gujarat's most photographed pieces of stepwell architecture.
