Humayun's Tomb, Delhi

The red sandstone and marble tomb that directly inspired the Taj Mahal's design — genuinely quieter, with a full charbagh garden setting.

About this location

Built in the 1560s as the tomb of Mughal emperor Humayun, this was the first garden-tomb on the Indian subcontinent and is widely credited as the architectural precursor to the Taj Mahal — the same charbagh (four-part garden) layout, the same red sandstone and white marble combination, refined decades later at Agra.

The tomb sits at the centre of a symmetrical Mughal garden crossed by water channels, with the main structure raised on a high platform. Several other tombs and structures are scattered through the same complex, including Isa Khan's Tomb, giving genuine variety within one site.

It consistently sees fewer visitors than the Taj Mahal or Red Fort despite comparable architectural significance, which in practice means considerably more usable space and time for a shoot without constant crowd management.
