The 42-metre war memorial arch at the heart of Delhi's ceremonial boulevard — free, open-air, and genuinely one of the most shot public spaces in the city.

About this location

India Gate was built in the 1920s as a memorial to roughly 84,000 Indian soldiers who died in World War I, designed by Edwin Lutyens as part of his broader plan for New Delhi. The 42-metre sandstone and granite arch sits at the eastern end of Rajpath (now Kartavya Path), the ceremonial boulevard leading toward Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Unlike most of Delhi's heritage sites, India Gate has no entry fee, no gate, and no fixed opening hours — it's a genuinely public open space, which makes it heavily used for everything from evening family outings to pre-wedding shoots. The surrounding lawns, fountains and the long boulevard view make it flexible for a range of shoot styles, though that same openness means it can get crowded, especially in the evenings.

The monument is illuminated at night, which is a distinct look from the daytime shots most people default to.

Drone policy & permissions

Drone policy

Drone use is restricted in this part of central Delhi given its proximity to government buildings — this is a broader airspace restriction, not a site-specific policy, so don't assume clearance is simple to get.

Permission requirements

Permission is required for shoots at this location. See the process below.

Permission process

Personal shoots need no permission. Any large commercial production involving crew, equipment trucks or crowd management should coordinate with local authorities in advance given how heavily used this public space already is.
